Description
“Old Folks At Home” (a.k.a. “Swanee River”), 5 string banjo tab is for sale as a download at www.jeffbelding.com. This song no doubt was a “major hit” (in sheet music sales) for Stephen Foster (Born July 4th, 1826 – Died Jan. 13, 1864). I never get tired of his great “AMERICAN” songs both listening to and arranging them for various instruments. You will find a couple more of them in my first banjo book as well.
I would consider this 5-string banjo arrangement (in the key of G) appropriate for the more intermediate to advanced player. First, you should be well versed in hammer-ons and pull-offs. Next, there is a wide use of index finger picking the 3rd string which requires paying extra attention to the picking hand. You will also need to form a few barre positions across at least 3 strings.
One more stylistic element that is highly recommended is to play this tune using “shuffle-style” 8th notes. It can be played in standard “straight-eighth” style, but the shuffle feel really enhances the beauty of the melody. Chords are provided for an accompanist.
