Soldier’s Joy on the 5 String Banjo – Part 1

Gettysburg National Military Park

A Video Lesson in Two Parts

In our year and a half on the road, I worked a lot on my banjo book as well as various side projects, writing new music and musical arrangements. This arrangement of Soldier’s Joy for banjo is one of the results of these “musings.”

I’m not a big fan of re-tuning my banjo, especially when I realize people are waiting (sometimes impatiently) for me to start my next song in a jam circle. And so, I came up with this version of the tune which is still in the “usual” key of C, but in this arrangement you won’t have to retune to C tuning.

Fiddle players like the tune in D, so if you’re playing with a fiddle it’s just a matter of putting the capo on the second fret to play along with them.

I made two video “lessons” for this song – the first one describes the A part. It’s available here on my YouTube channel

The second installment (in a week or so) will cover the B part as well as a suggested accompaniment. If you can’t pick it up completely by ear, the tablature is available at my store. Hope you enjoy it! – Jeff B.
